Hello again. I get the impression that this guest book is lacking guests.... maybe a mcfalls world tour is in order to stimulate the masses. Lille is Europe's capital of culture in 2004, perhaps all the groups I yearn to see from edinburgh can come in a big caravan... McFalls, DWL, Azitiz, Bag 0 Cats, Bloco Vomit, and even the Edinburgh Samba School, why not.... Hey, to whoever is personning the controls there... is it possible to take the email addresses off the posts I made. I have a fairly clean address, but I know that leaving an email on a web page is a recipe for spam reception. Still think that McFalls should tackle Eno's Here come the warm jets, ... it's like Interstellar O.D., but with the added value of not being known widely. all the best. john

oh well, I can think of worse places to be holed up than in some Sierra Nevada chalet... especiailly if someone's picking up the tab. Not convinced the best music is composed under such conditions though... The first strokes LP is a good benchmark for letting it all just happen, though I have no clue how they went about it. I always wonder if DGM wished that the Rosenbergs had actually been the Strokes. All that said, I am sure George will come up with the requisite hooks no matter the circumstances and please say hello to him for me (if he remembers me that is). Now off to search for how to buy some CDs from McFalls.... after all this time I finally got a job.

Well....noses to grindstones maybe isn't quite the way I'd have put it - all the people (as far as I know) on that particular project are involved in a number of others at the same time - and I'm not even sure if Dominic's in the country at the moment. I bumped into Riley, who did some backing vocals on the recordings, and (I think) some keyboard playing, up in Ullapool the other day, where he was performing with his band Aberfeldy (which is excellent, by the way), and my son George is currently locked up in a house in the Sierra Nevada, up above Sacramento, under strict instructions (from whoever's putting money into his band - Serial POP - at the moment) to write some "nice" pop songs! But no doubt the current DWL will get it together eventually.

Re DWL. I too was/am a big fan, and more, of DominicWaxingLyrical. Haven't had much luck contacting the lead singer for a while, but now know happily that it's because they are all working noses to Grindstone on a New LP. Magic! Funnily enough, I am still not (an probably never will be) tired of listening to the tracks they already put out. There are a couple near the end of the last LP that I sometimes listen to everyday. I just read this: "Other news: Robert has been recording backing string tracks for Dominic Harris’ new recording - a recording which features Robert’s son George on cello and bass guitar (George was a regular member of Dominic Waxing Lyrical a couple of years back)." Does anyone have any info/links about Dominic's new project? I was a big DWL fan and have missed them since they split! Massive thanks in advance.

Yes, I enjoyed the Bill Frisell CD you sent - very much - but havent yet felt that the material would be appropriate for me to rearrange for us. To tell you the truth (also) I have been so very busy with administrative work (there's noone else to do it) that I haven't done or thought about any (hardly any) arranging for quite a while. This will change, in that Brian and I have undertaken to write some music for us to play on the electric quartet of instruments we have just bought from Starfish Design (based up near Fort William). Tell you what I am looking for - is something kind of "jazzy" to arrange for a wonderful flautist (actually the SCO principal flute) called Alison Mitchell to play with us when we all go up to Shetland next March - something that would suit the flute in the way that "A Remark You Made" turned out to suit the cello. Oh dear, it's really getting quite sad in here. It could have been a very interesting forum, but moribund would be a generous description. I've tried a couple of times to initiate some discussion, to no avail. I think that, unless some of the members of McFall's join in to stimulate some activity, you'd be as well pulling the plug rather than providing space for lowlifes like Mr. bilkis78@yahoo.com To be more positive, I'd just like to say how much I enjoyed the SCO's Brahms Symphonies and Piano Concerto on Monday 18th August at the Usher Hall. I said earlier this year that I thought the SCO was the best Mozart outfit around, and the Brahms was up to the same standard. How much of it is due to Charles Mackerras, I wonder? He certainly seems to know how to bring out the best in you. Hopefully not goodbye, Tom Grieve P.S. I hate to nag, but did you ever get around to listening to Bill Frisell, Robert?-)

Living in the deep south as I do (Essex), and having tuned in to Mr. McFall's Chamber about three years ago, the opportunities of catching the group live have been limited. Until, it seemed this year! Not only was there a gig on Aug 19 co-inciding with our annual trip to the Fringe, but they were also coming down to London!!! Oh joy of joys!!! And then, I read the gossip page today. Gloom, despondency, misery. I appreciate the difficulties - my eighteen year old son, who has inherited my musical (in)sensibilities, and was also keenly looking forward to your gigs - is taking his first strides in the music industry. Oh well, there's always next year.

The over rated commersalistic world of MTV and reality tv shows is in fact not a real product.................................................... ....................WAIT!, There's More! And due to this fact people of a different gender, race or whatever are there by given the freedom that they so hartedly endure. but can not achieve because the white man is always keeping them down. But just as luck of the draw would have it when you can't even feel pain because of all the terrible things you have seen like a dude getting his little guy cut off. Disappointment and a pleasant surprise in the space of a minute! The former because I already have tickets for Alfred Brendel at the Usher Hall on August 19th, so will have to miss your performance (sorry, but Brendel is...well, Brendel). The latter because I see you are playing in London at long last, in November. You have many fans and friends down here, so it should be a good evening. I guess you will also be doing your day (evening?) job at the Usher Hall on August 18th with the SCO playing Brahms? I'm looking forward to that, though I must admit I'm not such a great admirer of Christian Zacharias; the last time I saw him at the Usher Hall, he had the piano taken to pieces in the middle of the performance because something was annoying him. That evening also made up my mind that playing the piano and conducting are two separate jobs, which should not be combined. Not by Christian Zacharias, Andras Schiff, or even Vladimir Ashkenazy. Anybody else have a view on soloists who conduct at the same time? By the way, Robert, did you ever get around to listening to the Bill Frisell CD? Tom Grieve

Such a fantastic concert yesterday evening (wednesday 12th feb 2003) at the Queen's Hall. I was wondering if there was any possibility of a recording of the actual evening - I loved all the music - espically Brian Schiele's own compositions - any copies?! Yes, well, we do have a piece in our repertoire called Cumnock Fair, by one James MacMillan - a native of Cumnock; and, yes, we did play the premiere there for the Cumnock Music Club - which I can highly recommend! However, I'm not very up on other music ventures in Cumnock. There are no McFalls gigs in the diary at the moment which feature Valentina Montoya-Martinez, though I'm sure more will arise in the reasonably near future [Our next two performances are of all-instrumental programmes].Valentina - you will be interested to know - does have a new tango band, which has performed once so far (to my knowledge!), at the annual Edinburgh Tango Society ball a couple of weeks ago. I know that they are planning more performances, but don't have any dates. Our first violinist, Greg, is playing in this band.
